Ying Ang’s Fruiting Bodies reimagines the mushroom as both a biological form and a feminist metaphor – an emergent, generative force that challenges dominant narratives of fertility and the female body. Photographed while walking through inner-city parks close to the artist’s home in Melbourne, the series examines how the fetishisation of fertility has shaped cultural perceptions of women, nature and reproduction, questioning whether growth and abundance must always serve a reproductive imperative. About The Artist
Ying Ang is a Chinese Singaporean photographer and author based in Melbourne, Australia. Her work has been widely exhibited and she has collaborated with a broad range of international cultural institutions, having served as the Director of Reflexions Masterclass in Paris and a Board Member of the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne. From 2019 to 2024, she was the co-founder and head curator of Le Space Gallery, an independent photographic space dedicated to visual storytelling. She is currently on the teaching faculty of the International Center of Photography in New York City.
